Sardinia Beach Umbrella Ban for Ages 10-65 Affects UK Tourists
Sardinia Beach Umbrella Ban: Ages 10-65 Hit UK Tourists

UK tourists visiting Sardinia are facing a new ban that affects individuals between the ages of 10 and 65. Umbrellas have been prohibited on a beach in Sardinia for anyone within this age range.

New Rules at Punta Molentis Beach

Local authorities at Punta Molentis beach in Villasimìus, located on Sardinia's south-east coast, have introduced these new regulations to protect the environment on the European Union holiday island. Tourists are now required to pay a €10 charge to use the beaches, with only families accompanied by children under 10 or individuals over 65 permitted to pitch an umbrella.

The announcement has sparked reactions on social media. One commenter on the Villasimìus council's Facebook page asked, "To put up an umbrella I have to rent a child??" Another joked, "So to come to the beach with an umbrella I either bring my grandad or need to have a child between now and tomorrow?"

Reasons Behind the Ban

Villasimìus council stated that fires and "exceptional marine weather events" prompted them to impose stricter rules to preserve the natural beauty of Punta Molentis. "For this reason it's necessary to limit the [human] impact and ensure the protection of this heritage for future generations," the council said in a notice on its website.

Tourism and Sardinia's Appeal

Travel operator TUI praises Sardinia on its website, saying: "Offering sweeping white beaches, kaleidoscopic history and a unique recipe collection, holidays to Sardinia add their own colour to the green, white and red of the Italian flag." TUI adds that Sardinia differs from the Italian mainland, with Sardinian or Sardo spoken as commonly as Italian. The island's architecture reflects influences from the Phoenicians, Vandals, and Byzantines, with Spanish influence evident in Alghero, where street signs are still written in Catalan and the cathedral design highlights its Catalan roots.
