Second HS2 Viaduct Over M6 Set for Installation in Birmingham

HS2 has unveiled drone footage showcasing a second massive viaduct in the West Midlands, now declared "ready to launch" over the M6 motorway. This west deck of the M6 South viaduct will facilitate high-speed trains heading towards Birmingham, with assembly progressing in four distinct sections. The initial 107-metre segment is scheduled to be slid over the M6 junction 4 southbound slip road on 11th April 2026.

Engineering Precision and Timeline

HS2's contractor in the West Midlands anticipates that maneuvering the 1250-tonne weathering steel structure into position will require just two days, ensuring a safe and efficient process. The slip road will close at 5am on Saturday, 11th April to commence the slide, with plans to reopen by 10pm on 12th April, minimizing disruption to local traffic.

Engineers on the West Midlands segment of the HS2 network are preparing for this critical launch near Chelmsley Wood. The 320-metre-long West deck will align parallel to the East deck, which was successfully installed over the M6 in three stages during 2025. Throughout June, the M6 will remain accessible to vehicles during the second stage of the West deck installation.

Minimizing Disruption and Collaborative Efforts

However, a complex series of works on the M6 and M42 is slated to begin in the summer months. Kamaljit Khokhar, National Highways Midlands Head of Planning and Development, emphasized: "The impact of these major construction works on road users is always our priority. We are collaborating closely with HS2 and partners to ensure safety and keep disruption to a minimum as this second viaduct is positioned."

He added: "We strongly support initiatives that reduce inconvenience for drivers and local communities, and we applaud HS2's innovative approaches to limit the number of necessary road closures." This project highlights ongoing efforts to balance infrastructure development with community and environmental considerations in the region.
