Tram Services Halted Between Black Country and Birmingham for Dudley Extension Works
West Midlands Metro has announced a significant disruption to tram services, with no trams operating between the Black Country and Birmingham for two days. This suspension is due to essential track connection works for the new Dudley extension, impacting commuters and travelers across the region.
Service Interruption Details
The tram services will be completely interrupted between Wednesbury Great Western Street and Edgbaston Village. This disruption is a result of tie-in work required to connect the existing track to the upcoming Dudley extension, a major infrastructure project aimed at expanding the metro network. The works are scheduled to take place over two days, with normal service expected to resume on Thursday, 19 February 2026.
Alternative Travel Arrangements
During this period, trams will only operate between Wednesbury and Wolverhampton. To mitigate the inconvenience, ticket acceptance has been arranged on selected services provided by NX West Midlands and West Midlands Railway. These alternative routes will cover journeys between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, including key stops such as Five Ways, ensuring that passengers can still reach their destinations with minimal disruption.
Recent Works and Context
This latest disruption follows recent maintenance activities, including work that began on Saturday, 7 February 2026, at Wolverhampton St George’s stop, where signaling equipment was replaced. The ongoing efforts highlight West Midlands Metro's commitment to upgrading and expanding the tram network to improve connectivity and support regional growth, particularly with projects like the Dudley extension enhancing access to areas such as Birmingham City’s new stadium and upgraded rail stations serving Villa Park.
Passengers are advised to plan their journeys in advance and check for updates from West Midlands Metro to stay informed about service changes and alternative travel options during this period of essential infrastructure development.
