This lesser-known rule applies to items such as balaclavas, full veils, or any other garment or mask used to hide the face.

The FCDO states: 'This includes balaclavas, full veils or any other garment or mask that is used to hide the face. You could get a fine of up to 150 euros if you do not comply.' Additionally, forcing someone to hide their face is a crime punishable by up to one year's imprisonment and a fine of up to 30,000 euros. If the person forced to hide their face is aged 17 or under, the sentence is doubled. The law applies to all tourists.

The FCDO also highlights severe penalties for drug-related offenses. Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry heavy fines and imprisonment for possession, use, or smuggling, even when transiting through airports, ports, and Eurostar stations. For driving offenses, police can issue on-the-spot fines for speeding. France has strict drink-driving laws with a legal alcohol limit a third lower than in England and Wales. Roadside checks for alcohol and drugs are common. Penalties include fines, loss of license, and prison.

The FCDO advises tourists to be alert to the possible use of 'date rape' drugs such as GHB and liquid ecstasy. It recommends buying your own drinks and keeping them in sight to avoid spiking.
