£16.4m Scheme to Tackle Congestion at Solihull Junction

Major £16.4 Million Scheme Gets Green Light to Tackle Solihull Congestion

A senior councillor has approved the next phase of a £16.4 million project aimed at improving the notoriously congested A45 Coventry Road, Damson Parkway, and Terminal Road junction in Solihull. This scheme is considered vital for enhancing access to Birmingham Airport and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), addressing current poor facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Funding and Support for the Project

The West Midlands Combined Authority has released grant funding for these much-needed improvements. Officer Walter Bailey emphasized at a recent Solihull Council meeting that the scheme is crucial for relieving existing congestion levels, describing it as one of the busiest junctions across the borough.

Cabinet member Councillor Ken Hawkins hailed the project as "long awaited", noting it has been in development for an extended period. Despite acknowledging the scheme as "high risk", he approved the appointment of Balfour Beatty as the contractor to move forward with the work.

Public Consultation and Concerns

A public consultation held in 2021 revealed strong support, with 79 percent of 200 respondents either fully or partially backing the scheme. However, concerns were raised about potential overspends, with the council responsible for covering any costs exceeding the £16.4 million budget.

The project has already commenced with tree clearance work, which sparked some controversy due to its timing during nesting season. Councillor Hawkins defended this early start, explaining that delaying it would have pushed the project back until next year.

Economic and Community Benefits

The improvements are designed to support the local economy, businesses, and residents while enabling future growth in the area. By alleviating congestion, the project aims to enhance traffic flow and accessibility, contributing to overall regional development.
