Easter Travel Boost: National Highways Clears 1,500 Miles of Roadworks
In a significant move to facilitate smoother travel during the busy Easter holiday period, National Highways has announced the removal of approximately 1,500 miles of roadworks across England's major road network. This clearance will be in effect from Thursday, April 2, through Monday, April 6, ensuring that 98 percent of motorways and key A-roads will be free of construction activity.

This announcement coincides with a major government commitment to upgrade and future-proof roads in the Midlands region. Over £3.7 billion has been allocated as part of the Road Investment Strategy (RIS3), a five-year plan designed to enhance the road network's reliability and performance.
Key components of this investment include:
- Resurfacing roads and addressing potholes to deliver smoother journeys.
- Replacing worn-out sections of motorway to increase durability.
- Funding major schemes that improve connectivity and support economic growth.
Notable projects under RIS3 encompass the construction of a new dual carriageway link between the M54 and M6, enhancements to the A46 bypass at Newark, and upgrades to critical junctions near Derby and Nottingham.
