A learner driver in the UK has demonstrated extraordinary persistence by finally passing their driving theory test on the 75th attempt, according to new data released by the AA Driving School.
The determined individual spent a staggering £1,725 in test fees alone, with each attempt costing £23. This remarkable case highlights the challenges some learners face when tackling the mandatory theory examination.
Extreme Cases of Test Persistence
In an even more extreme example, the AA Driving School revealed that another learner has taken the theory test 128 times without success, accumulating fees totalling £2,944. These figures were obtained through a Freedom of Information request to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
The driving theory test assesses candidates' knowledge of road rules and safe driving practices through multiple-choice questions and hazard perception video clips. Learners must pass this exam before they can book their practical driving test.
Practical Test Struggles
The statistics also uncovered challenges with the practical driving test. One person required 21 attempts to pass their practical exam, costing between £1,302 and £1,575 depending on test centre fees.
Even more remarkably, two other learners have each failed the practical test 37 times, spending up to £2,220 each in their pursuit of a full driving licence.
Emma Bush, managing director at AA Driving School, acknowledged that "life can get in the way" of proper revision, leading to "extra nerves and time-pressures on the day." She emphasised that "it is easy to underestimate the level of knowledge required to pass the theory test."
Expert Advice for Success
Bush praised the commitment shown by those who persist through multiple attempts, noting that passing the theory test represents "the first step towards achieving your full driving licence." However, she stressed that "a high number of attempts is the exception, not the rule."
The AA Driving School recommends that learners only book their practical test "when their instructor thinks they are ready to pass." Taking mock tests with your instructor can help manage nerves and build confidence ahead of the real examination.
According to DVSA data for the 2024/25 financial year, pass rates stand at 44.9% for theory tests and 48.7% for practical tests. Officials continue to urge learners not to book their practical exam until they feel completely prepared, particularly amid ongoing efforts to reduce the UK's driving test backlog.
