A school bus driver has tragically died after a coach carrying 40 children flipped onto its roof in a rural area near Newry. The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 17, just after 3:30 pm on Tullyah Road, leaving the local community in shock.

Eyewitnesses Describe Chaotic Scene

Neighbors and eyewitnesses rushed to the scene to help free the driver and pupils from the wreckage. Witnesses reported seeing children climbing out of the roof and windows of the bus, which had come to rest on its side over a hedge. The private hire bus was traveling from St Paul's High School in Bessbrook towards Whitecross at the time of the accident.

Massive Emergency Response

Emergency crews swung into action within minutes, with first responders describing it as a "significant incident." The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service dispatched five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, one officer, and an ambulance doctor to the scene. Despite the immediate and extensive emergency response, the driver could not be saved.

Bus Company Confirms Tragic Loss

Quinn Coaches, the private bus company, confirmed the driver's death in a statement on social media. A spokesperson said, "We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our drivers was involved in a road traffic accident whilst transporting school children today. Despite immediate emergency response, our dear colleague sadly passed away."

The company added, "Our first thoughts are with his family, friends, and fellow colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. He was a respected and experienced member of our team, and he will be greatly missed."

Children Uninjured, Community in Shock

In a relief to all involved, the bus company confirmed that no children were injured during the incident. They emphasized, "The safety and wellbeing of our drivers and passengers is always our highest priority." However, the crash has caused significant shock to the pupils on board, as noted by Dáithí Murray, principal of St Paul's High School, who wrote to parents about the incident.

Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty also confirmed that all the children walked away relatively unscathed. Police crash scene investigators remain at the scene tonight as they work to piece together what led to the horror crash.
