Birmingham Taxi Driver Fined £1,500 for Illegal Plying for Hire
Birmingham taxi driver fined £1,500 for illegal hiring

A taxi driver in Birmingham has been ordered to pay nearly £1,500 in court costs and received eight penalty points on his licence after being stopped by police for illegally picking up passengers. The incident occurred in September last year when the driver accepted two women in Navigation Street, Birmingham city centre, without a pre-booked journey.

Illegal plying for hire

Under UK law, private hire drivers cannot accept fares on the street; they must only carry out pre-booked journeys arranged through a licensed operator. The driver, who held a valid private hire licence, admitted to breaking the law. West Midlands Police confirmed that although he was licensed, he knowingly engaged in illegal activity.

Court penalty and driving ban risk

At a court hearing this month, the driver was fined and ordered to pay costs totaling £1,500. Additionally, he received eight penalty points on his driving licence. This means any further driving offence could result in a driving ban.

Chief Inspector Vicki Stott of West Midlands Police emphasised the importance of passenger safety. She stated: "The safety of everyone coming in and out of the city centre is paramount, and one way of doing this is making sure they are travelling safely. An un-booked journey is dangerous for the passenger, as there is no record of the journey which can be traced."

She added: "The vast majority of private hire drivers are operating legitimately and responsibly, and it's not fair when someone breaks the law to make quick money. We know the importance of keeping everyone safe, and we won't have vulnerable people, especially women and girls, in a position where they are not safe. We want to help make sure Birmingham, and the wider West Midlands towns and cities, are safe and law-abiding places for everyone to visit, work or live."

This case serves as a reminder that illegal plying for hire is a serious offence with significant consequences, including financial penalties and the potential loss of a driving licence.
