New Motorhome and Campervan Parking Ban in Saltburn Branded 'Terrible' by Businesses
Motorhome Ban in Saltburn Called 'Terrible' by Businesses

New motorhome and campervan parking rules in Saltburn, a popular seaside destination in North East England, have been branded 'terrible' by local businesses. The restrictions, enforced by Redcar and Cleveland Council, prohibit motorhomes from parking in unmarked areas at any time, aiming to address safety, litter, and overcrowding issues.

Details of the New Restrictions

The ban officially took effect on Monday, July 6, 2026, targeting a popular overnight spot for motorhomes. The council stated the rules are intended to balance the needs of residents and visitors. However, local businesses argue the restrictions could deter day-trippers and harm the local economy.

Local Resident Concerns

Resident Ken Hutley expressed frustration over vehicles blocking his sea view. 'We've had vans here parked for 10 months,' he said. 'Some people live in them. We've counted up to 100 at really busy times, but generally, sort of 15, 16. A vehicle of 20-odd feet long is an obstacle.'

Business Owners React

Glenn Pearson, from The Seaview Restaurant, told the BBC the restrictions would discourage visitors. 'People used to say 'let's go out for a day out to the seaside' and [the council] have included a policy now, which means, 'let's go for four hours at the seaside',' he said. 'People will not come to Saltburn any more. They will go to Whitby, they will go to Sandsend, they will go to Runswick Bay, so businesses like ours that rely on tourism will no longer see those people coming.'

Evan Rogers, at Saltburn Surf Shop, called the restrictions 'terrible for the town'. 'No-one comes to Saltburn for four hours, they want to come for the day, especially to the beach,' he added.
