Major Birmingham Road Closure Announced for HS2 Construction Works
A significant road in Birmingham is set to undergo a full closure for two weeks to facilitate essential construction work linked to the HS2 high-speed rail project. The closure will impact the A47 Heartlands Parkway, a key route in the city, as part of efforts to rebuild the Saltley Viaduct and other infrastructure components.
Closure Details and Timeline
The A47 Heartlands Parkway will be shut in both directions between the Heartlands Roundabout and Saltley Viaduct. This closure is scheduled to begin on Sunday, February 22, 2026, and will continue until Saturday, March 7, 2026, spanning a full two-week period. The shutdown is necessary to allow for safe and efficient execution of HS2-related activities, which include demolition and reconstruction work on critical structures.
HS2 Project Context and Impact
HS2 is recognized as the largest infrastructure initiative in the United Kingdom, aiming to enhance connectivity by linking London to the West Midlands. As part of this broader scheme, the project involves the rebuilding of both the Aston Church Road overbridge and the Saltley Viaduct. Following the completion of the Aston Church Road phase, attention will shift to the Saltley Viaduct, where a new bridge will be constructed to enable the high-speed train to cross the Lawley Middleway dual highway.
Diversion Plans for Road Users
Transport for West Midlands has outlined specific diversion routes to minimize disruption during the closure. For motorists traveling into Birmingham city centre by car, the recommended alternative path includes:
- Aston Church Road
- Nechells Park Road
- The A47 via Goodrick Way
For those heading away from the city centre, the diversion will guide vehicles through:
- Thimble Mill Lane via Goodrick Way
- Long Acre
- The A47 via Cuckoo Road
Public Transport Adjustments
Bus services will also be affected by the road closure. National Express West Midlands has confirmed that its services X12 and X13 will be rerouted to use Tyburn Road and the A38 Aston Expressway instead of the usual path along the A47 Heartlands Parkway. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and check for any updates from the transport provider.
This temporary closure underscores the ongoing efforts to advance the HS2 project, which promises to transform rail travel in the region while necessitating short-term adjustments for local commuters and residents.
