Driving Instructor Criticizes Modern Car Feature: 'Stop-Start' Technology
Driving Instructor Slams Modern Car 'Stop-Start' Technology

Driving Professional Voices Strong Opposition to Modern Automotive Feature

A qualified driving instructor has publicly expressed her intense dislike for a specific technological feature increasingly common in contemporary vehicles. While acknowledging the intended purpose of the innovation, she firmly believes it has detrimental effects on the automobile itself.

The Specific Grievance: Automatic Engine Stop-Start Systems

Aman Sanghera, who operates Clearview Driving, a driving school based in London, has identified the "stop-start" technology as the feature she "genuinely hates." This system is engineered to automatically shut off the engine when the vehicle comes to a complete halt, such as at traffic lights or in stationary traffic, and then restart it instantly when the driver prepares to move again.

The primary design goals are to reduce fuel consumption and lower harmful emissions by minimizing unnecessary engine idling. However, Sanghera argues that the practical application, particularly in urban driving conditions, renders the feature more of a nuisance than a benefit.

"I completely get what it's there for; it's to stop the car idling when you're waiting completely at a red light because it's bad for the environment and bad for everyone around you," she stated. "But, if you imagine you're driving in a town where there's give-way junctions one after the other... as I get to that give-way junction, I pause. That pause might only be for a mere five seconds... But in the time that I pause, the engine switches off, which is very annoying because five seconds later, I'm going to go again."

Her core concern is that this constant cycling on and off for very brief periods is, in her professional opinion, "really bad for the car." She reports routinely deactivating the function immediately upon entering any vehicle equipped with it, preferring manual control for situations involving longer waits.

Industry Perspective: Addressing Common Concerns

The driving instructor's apprehension about potential engine wear is noted as a widespread concern among motorists. However, automotive organizations like The AA provide a counterpoint, suggesting these worries are largely unfounded for properly maintained vehicles.

According to The AA, vehicles incorporating stop-start technology are specifically built with enhanced components to manage the frequent restart cycles. "Stop-start systems are designed to prevent engine damage by using reinforced starter motors and batteries that can handle frequent restarts," their guidance explains. "These systems ensure that the engine only stops and starts under optimal conditions, reducing wear and tear on engine components and maintaining durability."

While acknowledging the increased demand placed on the vehicle's electrical system, The AA clarifies that cars with this feature come equipped with more robust batteries. They still emphasize the importance of regular maintenance checks to ensure battery health and overall system reliability.

The Intended Benefits: Fuel Savings and Environmental Gains

Despite the criticism, the technology is promoted for its significant advantages:

  • Improved Fuel Efficiency: By cutting engine idling time, especially in stop-and-go urban traffic, the system can lead to measurable reductions in fuel consumption.
  • Reduced Environmental Impact: Less idling directly translates to lower emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants from the exhaust, contributing to better local air quality.

This debate highlights a growing tension in the automotive world between the push for greater efficiency and environmental responsibility, and the practical, experiential concerns of professional drivers and everyday users. The discussion underscores that not all technological advancements are universally welcomed, even when their underlying goals are broadly supported.
