A seven-month-old baby girl and three Gambian nationals from Birmingham died when their red Hyundai left the A38 and crashed into trees near the Toyota Island in Derby at about 11pm on Saturday, Derbyshire Constabulary has confirmed.
Crash Details
The vehicle carried five occupants. Two women, aged 18 and 30, and a 36-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene, while the infant was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards. The driver, a 33-year-old man, was treated for serious injuries and later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
Victims Identified
The Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds identified one of the deceased as Abu Camara, describing him as a "dedicated servant of his community" who mentored young children through football. His wife, their seven-month-old daughter, and a woman believed to be another relative also died in the collision.
A statement from the society read: "He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service. We are grateful that the driver survived the collision, and we pray for his full and speedy recovery." The society added: "May Allah forgive them all, have mercy on them, grant them the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus, and give their families strength and patience during this heartbreaking time."
Community Tributes
On Monday, the Gambia High Commission in the UK referred to the deaths of the four individuals as "tragic." The High Commissioner, Dr Fatou Bensouda, extended her "deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families during this difficult time." Deputy Head of Mission Mr Suntou Touray spoke with the President of the Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds, Mr Yanks Sawo, to convey condolences and coordinate support. The High Commission confirmed it remains in contact with relevant authorities and affected families.
The four were travelling together from Birmingham to Leeds at the time of the crash. Specialist officers are supporting the bereaved relatives.
Investigation Ongoing
Derbyshire Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision, which occurred on a stretch of the A38 near the Toyota Island junction. The road was closed for several hours for forensic examination. No further details have been released about the driver's condition or the exact cause of the crash.
