Fuel Finder Scheme Goes Live: Real-Time Price Data Now Mandatory at All UK Petrol Stations

A significant regulatory shift has transformed how British motorists check fuel costs, with the mandatory Fuel Finder Scheme officially launching across the United Kingdom today. This Government-backed initiative compels every petrol station in the country to share live pricing data directly with the public, fundamentally altering the landscape of fuel retail transparency.

New Rules for Immediate Price Reporting

Under the new regulations, all fuel retailers are now legally required to update their official price records within 30 minutes of any change to the numbers displayed on their forecourt signs. This data will be made freely accessible through the dedicated Fuel Finder website and will be integrated into popular mapping software and price comparison applications. The scheme aims to empower drivers, ensuring that no one pays over the odds simply due to a lack of accessible, up-to-date local price information.

Government Confirmation and Industry Mandate

The operational status of the scheme was confirmed by Martin McCluskey, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. He stated that registration is now open for petrol stations and that the public-facing tools are live. Furthermore, Fuels Industry UK has communicated to its members that participation is compulsory for all petrol filling stations, regardless of whether they are independently operated or part of a larger corporate group.

Driving Competition and Consumer Savings

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has been a vocal proponent of such a scheme. Chief Executive Sarah Cardell emphasised the need to reignite competition among retailers by making it easier for drivers to compare live prices. The CMA suggests that with effective price comparison, motorists could save around £4.50 per tank for a typical family car within a five-minute drive radius. This move is designed to end the practice of drivers having to physically tour forecourts to check prices, with the potential for live data to appear directly in satnavs and map apps.

Context and Future Outlook

The launch follows a period of relative price stability, with 2025 averages of 135.69p for petrol and 142.96p for diesel. Analysis by the RAC has consistently highlighted a price gap, noting that in December, drivers saved an average of 3p per litre by using supermarket forecourts over independents. Simon Williams, RAC head of policy, expressed hope that 2026 will see more competitive pump prices as a direct result of the Fuel Finder Scheme's introduction. Experts also anticipate that the real-time nature of the data will prevent retailers from delaying price reductions when wholesale costs fall.

This major change represents a concerted effort to enhance market transparency and put financial power back into the hands of UK drivers, who can now access the Fuel Finder website or download the companion app to make fully informed refuelling decisions.
