UK Snow Forecast: Heavy Snowfall to Hit Scotland and North in Late January
Late January Snow Forecast: Heavy Falls for Scotland

Fresh snowfall is predicted to blanket parts of the United Kingdom before the end of January, according to the latest meteorological data. This follows the disruption caused earlier in the month by Storm Goretti, with a new wintry system poised to move across the country.

Where and When Will the Snow Strike?

Detailed projections from WXCharts weather maps indicate that Wednesday, January 28, is the date to watch. The most intense activity is currently expected to be largely confined to Scotland and the far north of England. Some areas of Scotland could experience particularly heavy accumulations, with forecasts suggesting over 11 inches (28 centimetres) of snow in the worst-affected locations.

While the core of the system is aimed at the north, South Wales may also see some light flurries. There remains a possibility that snow could drift further south into the Midlands, although most of that region is not currently forecast to receive heavy falls.

A Battle of Weather Fronts

The Met Office's long-range forecast for the period from January 23 to February 1 outlines a climatic tug-of-war. The national weather service states that the UK will see a conflict between milder, wetter Atlantic systems pushing from the west and colder, drier conditions associated with high pressure from the east.

Initially, the Atlantic influence is expected to dominate for most areas, bringing showers or longer spells of rain, with temperatures around or slightly above average. However, the far northeast is likely to remain colder, with some sleet or snow.

Potential Shift to Colder Conditions

The forecast highlights an increased chance of a widespread turn to colder and drier weather later in the period. While this aspect remains uncertain, the Met Office notes that such a transition also raises the potential for snow across other parts of the country.

This impending cold snap serves as a reminder that winter is far from over. Residents, particularly in northern regions, are advised to stay updated with the latest local forecasts and travel information as the situation develops towards the end of the month.
