The M5 motorway in Worcestershire is facing significant disruption this morning as emergency resurfacing works, delayed by heavy rain, continue to keep lanes closed during rush hour. National Highways has confirmed that the northbound carriageway between Junction 5 (Droitwich) and Junction 4A (M42) remains shut after a lorry fire caused substantial damage to the road surface on Monday, May 27.
Delays Overnight Due to Rain
Efforts to repair the motorway overnight were hampered by persistent rain, according to a National Highways spokesperson. The spokesperson stated: 'Due to heavy rain overnight, resurfacing has taken longer than expected.' As a result, lanes one and two are closed, and traffic is already backing up for miles, even before the peak of rush hour.
CCTV traffic cameras have captured long queues forming on the northbound carriageway, with motorists advised to avoid the area if possible. The delays are expected to persist throughout the morning as work continues.
Diversion Route in Place
National Highways has set up a diversion route for northbound traffic. Motorists are advised to follow the Solid Diamond diversion symbol on road signs. The detailed route is as follows:
- Exit the M5 at Junction 5 and take the second exit onto the A38 northbound.
- Continue on the A38 through Wychbold, Bromsgrove, Lickey End to Lydiate Ash, then rejoin the M5 at Junction 4.
- At Junction 4, take the third exit to rejoin the M5 northbound.
- Traffic heading for the M42 northbound can join via Junction 1 of the M42 at Lickey End.
The spokesperson added: 'If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.'
Photographs Show Miles of Congestion
Images from traffic cameras show miles of congestion already building up on the M5, with northbound motorists facing significant delays. The rush hour headache is set to continue as emergency resurfacing work remains ongoing. Drivers are urged to seek alternative routes or postpone their journeys if possible.
This is an ongoing breaking event. Check back for further updates as they become available.
