M6 Driver Faces Prosecution After Van Disintegrates on Motorway
A motorist is set to be prosecuted for dangerous driving after he continued on the M6 motorway in Staffordshire for approximately 25 miles while the back end of his van disintegrated, scattering debris across the carriageway. The incident occurred near junction 16, the turn-off for Crewe, Stoke-on-Trent, and Newcastle-under-Lyme, on Thursday, February 26.
Driver Ignored Debris and Failed to Report Incident
According to Staffordshire Police, the van "spontaneously deconstructed itself," leaving debris spread all over the motorway. Instead of stopping, the driver pretended nothing had happened and failed to call 999 to report the hazardous situation. This forced other drivers to swerve around the debris to avoid accidents.
The driver was eventually intercepted and stopped at junction 13, the turn-off for Stafford, around 25 miles from where the van initially fell apart. Police noted that even at this point, parts of the van were still at risk of falling off, posing a continued danger to road users.
Vehicle Seized and Charges Filed
The van was seized by authorities, and the driver is being prosecuted for "using a vehicle in a dangerous condition." Staffordshire Road Crime team emphasized the seriousness of the offense in a Facebook post, warning drivers to stop and report such incidents immediately to avoid prosecution.
Key details from the incident include:
