West Midlands Police have reported a significant number of motorists, including a truck driver, for exceeding speed limits in a targeted enforcement operation across Birmingham. The crackdown comes as new 30mph restrictions are implemented on over two dozen key roads in the city, marking a substantial change for local drivers.
Truck Driver Clocked at 52mph in 30mph Zone
On Tuesday, January 20, a trucker was reported for driving at 52mph on Heartlands Parkway in Nechells, where a new 30mph limit is now in force. This incident was part of a broader police initiative focusing on the so-called 'fatal four' traffic offences, with speed being a primary concern.
Dozens of Motorists Stopped in Same Location
The truck driver was not alone in flouting the law. Police confirmed that an additional 29 drivers were caught speeding at the exact same spot on Heartlands Parkway. Furthermore, as part of the same operation, 40 more motorists were found to be exceeding speed limits on the M5 motorway.
In a social media update, WMP Traffic stated: "#WMP D-Unit #ANPRInterceptors conducted various #fatal4 speed ops today in and around our patch. The driver of this truck was reported for driving at 52mph in a 30 on Heartlands Parkway. He was one of another 29 at the same location and 40 further on the M5."
Major Changes to Birmingham's Road Speed Limits
This enforcement action coincides with the introduction of new 30mph speed limits on more than two dozen roads throughout Birmingham. Drivers are urged to familiarise themselves with these changes to avoid penalties and enhance road safety. The updated limits affect various arterial routes and local streets, aiming to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow in residential and high-risk areas.
