Nationwide Reaffirms Branch Commitment for Older and Offline Customers

Nationwide Building Society has issued a significant update regarding its branch services, specifically highlighting their ongoing importance for older customers. This announcement follows the provider's recent statement affecting all 605 of its high street outlets across the United Kingdom.

Banking Leaders Address Financial Inclusion with Treasury Committee

During a recent session with the Treasury Committee, banking industry leaders discussed efforts to extend financial services to a broader population. Stephen Noakes, Nationwide's Director of Retail, provided compelling testimony to Members of Parliament. He revealed that over the past twelve months, a substantial 56 percent of Nationwide's customers utilized their physical branches.

"For Nationwide, branch banking is not a minority offering," Noakes emphasized. "When examining the demographic profile of the average Nationwide customer who uses a branch, it is typically older individuals."

He further explained, "We are likely seeing a disproportionate number of customers who are offline, but I believe it is beneficial for the development of the banking sector to have a large mutual—not just ourselves; other building societies are in a similar position—that continues to offer multiple channels based on customer choice."

Branch Commitment Extended Beyond 2030

Noakes confidently projected that this branch-centric approach will persist well into the future. "I anticipate this situation will exist beyond 2030, which is when our current branch commitment is set," he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Dame Debbie Crosbie DBE, Group Chief Executive at Nationwide, affirmed the society's dedication. "Our customers can be confident that they can bank with us in whichever way they choose," she declared. "Branches are vital to our customers, to local communities, and to the overall health of our High Streets. That is precisely why Nationwide will continue to keep branches open, alongside our ongoing investment in online and telephone banking channels."

Nationwide's Expanding Branch Network Dominance

Nationwide currently operates the United Kingdom's largest single-brand banking network, boasting 605 branches nationwide. When combined with Virgin Money's 91 branches, the total network expands to an impressive 696 branches, solidifying its presence across the country.

Recent figures from Nationwide indicate a notable increase in branch usage and new account openings projected through 2025. This growth is particularly pronounced in areas where Nationwide serves as the 'last branch in town'—a critical lifeline for local residents.

The 'Last Branch in Town' Phenomenon

Since January of this year, an additional 33 Nationwide branches have become the sole banking option in their respective locations following closures by other financial institutions. Nationwide is now the last remaining branch in 133 towns and villages throughout the UK, underscoring its essential role in maintaining financial accessibility and community vitality.

This strategic commitment not only supports older and offline customers but also reinforces the building society's foundational principles of mutuality and community service in an increasingly digital banking landscape.
