Financial Ombudsman Issues Warning to Young Drivers on Car Insurance
The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) is urging young drivers across the United Kingdom to make informed decisions when purchasing car insurance, following a surge in complaints from this demographic. Last year, from 1 January to 31 December 2025, the Ombudsman received over 1,200 car insurance complaints specifically from drivers under the age of 25.
Top Complaints and Common Issues
The data highlights three primary areas of concern for young motorists. Policy cancellations ranked as the most frequent issue, followed closely by administration or customer service problems. Claim-related complaints, including significant delays in settling claims, rounded out the top three categories.
Andy Wright, Ombudsman Director, emphasized the importance of careful consideration. "Driving a car for the first time is often seen as an exciting rite of passage, but young drivers can overlook key details when choosing car insurance," he stated.
Avoiding Costly Insurance Mistakes
Wright outlined several common pitfalls that young drivers should actively avoid to prevent financial and legal repercussions.
- Failing to Declare Modifications: Not informing insurers about vehicle changes can invalidate coverage.
- 'Fronting' Policies: Listing a more experienced driver as the main user when a younger, riskier driver is primarily behind the wheel is fraudulent.
- Misunderstanding Telematics: Not grasping how 'black box' policies work can lead to unexpected issues.
"This is why we’re urging young drivers to always read the small print and speak directly with their insurer if anything is unclear to avoid costly mistakes," Wright advised.
Essential Advice for Policyholders
The Ombudsman provided clear guidance for all drivers, particularly younger ones, to ensure their insurance remains valid and effective.
- Always provide completely accurate information regarding who will be driving the vehicle, where it will be kept overnight, and any past driving convictions. Dishonesty can render a policy void and claims unpaid.
- If considering a telematics policy, thoroughly understand how it operates and what data it collects. While these policies can offer reduced premiums for safe driving, failing to meet the specific requirements may mean you never receive these benefits, or could even result in policy cancellation.
