Cotswold Village Keeps Christmas Lights On Until February to Brighten January
Broadway's Christmas lights to stay on until February

The famously picturesque village of Broadway in the Cotswolds has decided to extend the festive season by keeping its Christmas lights shining brightly throughout the month of January. The twinkling illuminations, which adorn the red chestnut trees and historic Georgian architecture along the wide high street, will now remain on in the evenings until 2nd February.

A Cheerful Trial for Dark Winter Days

A spokesperson for Broadway Cotswolds announced the move on social media, describing it as "cheery January news." They confirmed that this extended 'lights on' period is being trialled for the first time this year. It was noted that the lights on the separate remembrance Tree of Light were switched off on 6th January as is traditional.

The decision has been met with widespread delight from residents and visitors alike. Many see it as a perfect antidote to the post-Christmas gloom that often descends in January. One supporter commented that it provides "such a lift in dark January days," while another noted it makes the village "even more unique than it already is." Some have even suggested the lights could become a permanent winter feature, looking beautiful on late spring and summer evenings.

Balancing Celebration with Tradition

Not every reaction has been wholly in favour, however. One person raised a traditional concern, questioning if it was "bad luck after the 12th night to keep them on" and proposed switching them off and putting them back on earlier next November instead. This highlights the balance communities strike between creating modern cheer and observing longstanding customs.

Regardless, the initiative is set to enhance the village's considerable charm during a typically quiet month. Broadway is renowned for its honey-stone buildings, independent shops, and galleries, making it a popular destination for day trips. The continued glow of the lights offers an extra incentive for visitors to explore its cosy pubs like The Swan Inn or Broadway Hotel, enjoy tea at Hunters Tea Room, or browse unique stores such as Royle Collective for local gifts and Wild at Heart for quirky finds.

A Boost for Winter Tourism

The extended lighting scheme is likely to provide a welcome boost to local businesses in the traditionally quieter post-Christmas period. It creates a magical atmosphere that encourages evening visits and overnight stays. For those wishing to make a weekend of it, accommodation options include Top Cottage with its wood-fired hot tub or The Granary at nearby Lane End Farm.

For visitors travelling from Birmingham, Broadway is accessible in just over an hour by car via the A46. Alternatively, a train journey to Evesham from Birmingham New Street, followed by a short bus or taxi ride, will also bring you to this uniquely illuminated winter destination.
