A popular Sutton Coldfield restaurant faces a multi-day closure after Storm Goretti tore through its outdoor dining area, causing severe damage described as 'beyond simple repair'.
Significant Damage and Power Outages
The Bracebridge, located within the scenic Sutton Park, discovered the extensive destruction on Saturday, January 10. The violent weather, which had blanketed the Midlands in snow, completely collapsed the venue's 'stretch tent' canopy overlooking Bracebridge Pool. The restaurant's team stated the canopy is now not repairable.
Beyond the visual damage, the storm triggered significant operational problems. The venue experienced power and internet issues, while fallen trees blocked the access road, prompting Birmingham City Council to close it. This combination of factors forced the closure of both the main restaurant and its Sip and Slice coffee shop.
Closure and Community Call for Help
In a statement posted online, the management confirmed the restaurant will remain closed until at least Tuesday, January 13, with hopes to reopen on Wednesday pending road clearance and power restoration. They revealed the storm damage was 'not insurable', compounding the challenge.
In a heartfelt update, the owners thanked the community for an outpouring of support and issued an appeal for volunteers. "If anyone is free and would like to lend a hand, we’ll be on site Tuesday 13th from 10am," the statement read, promising off-grid coffee facilities for helpers. The team is now focused on safely removing the wrecked tent and making repairs.
Ongoing Recovery Efforts
The guest services team is contacting all customers with upcoming bookings to rearrange or cancel. Despite the setback, the venue expressed determination to reopen as soon as possible, buoyed by local kindness. "Your kindness has truly helped make a very sh*t situation that little bit easier," the owners concluded.
The incident highlights the disruptive impact of the recent severe weather on local businesses, particularly those with outdoor infrastructure. The Bracebridge's experience serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of hospitality venues to extreme winter storms.
