The popular American-style restaurant chain TGI Fridays has been forced to close 16 of its UK branches immediately, resulting in the loss of hundreds of jobs. The move comes as the company entered administration before being sold in a last-minute rescue deal.
Which TGI Fridays Locations Are Closing?
The administration process, which concluded with a sale on January 13, 2026, has led to the sudden shutdown of 16 family restaurants across the country. The following sites have been closed with immediate effect:
- Aberdeen Beach
- Ashton
- Bournemouth
- Braintree
- Coventry
- Crawley
- Doncaster
- Edinburgh
- Nottingham
- Reading
- Sheffield
- Staines
- Stevenage
The chain, which was previously owned by Liberty Bar and Restaurant Group Limited, has now been purchased by Sugarloaf TGIF Operations Limited. While this deal safeguards the majority of the remaining branches, it could not prevent the significant job losses associated with the 16 closures.
Rescue Deal Secures Future But At A Cost
The takeover, described as an immediate rescue package, was necessary to secure the long-term future of TGI Fridays in the UK. Company bosses stated that the closure of the 16 underperforming sites was an essential condition for the deal to proceed and ensure the survival of the wider brand.
In a statement addressing the difficult situation, Phil Broad, Global President of TGI Fridays, said: "We have been working closely to explore all available options for securing the long-term future of TGI Fridays in the UK, and believe that this is the best outcome for the business, preserves jobs, and offers a strong platform for success and growth."
He added, "I believe that the future of the brand is in strong hands - focused on reinvigorating the brand while continuing to deliver the bold flavours, welcoming atmosphere, and high-energy dining experience that define TGI Fridays."
Impact and Industry Context
The news has sent shockwaves through the UK's casual dining sector and comes as a blow to employees at the affected restaurants. While the administration and sale process had been unfolding for several weeks, the confirmation of the site closures and job cuts marks a stark moment for the well-known chain.
This event places TGI Fridays among other major restaurant brands that have faced significant restructuring in recent years, highlighting the ongoing challenges within the UK hospitality industry. The primary focus for the new owners will now be on stabilising the remaining estate and attempting to rebuild the brand's presence following this substantial reduction.
