Foreign Office Issues Alert on New Charges for UK Tourists in Egypt
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a critical alert to UK tourists visiting Egypt, warning of new charges that could impact travel plans. The updated guidance, released on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, highlights specific fees for those entering Egypt from neighbouring countries.
New Fees for Entry from Jordan and Israel
British holidaymakers travelling to Egypt from Jordan now face a £26 charge per person. Similarly, those crossing from Israel into Egypt at the Taba Border Crossing are subject to a 'Sinai Tax' of 25 US dollars, which is approximately £20. This tax does not apply to children under 24 months old.
Important Note: The Sinai Tax is payable in US dollars, cash only, at the Taba Border Crossing. It grants a free entry permission stamp for stays of up to 15 days within the Sinai Peninsula. However, travellers should be aware that there are no ATMs dispensing US dollars at this crossing, so obtaining cash beforehand is essential.
Visa Requirements for Extended Stays
If your stay in Sinai exceeds 15 days, or if you plan to travel beyond the Sinai Peninsula to destinations like Cairo or Hurghada, an additional entry visa is required. This visa costs 30 US dollars and can be purchased at the Taba Border Crossing or Sharm El-Sheikh airport.
Additional costs may apply: At the Taba Border Crossing, a letter of guarantee might be needed, obtainable from travel agents in the arrivals hall for around 25 US dollars. For those entering via ferry from Jordan to Taba Heights or Nuweiba, visa fees vary: 35 US dollars at Taba Heights and 30 US dollars at Nuweiba, payable in cash at port terminals.
Travel Advice and Preparations
The FCDO emphasises that all payments for these charges and visas must be made in cash, preferably in US dollars acquired before travel. Ferry services operate between Aqaba in Jordan and Egyptian ports like Taba Heights and Nuweiba, but schedules should be checked directly with operators.
Tourists are advised to review the latest travel advice for Jordan to understand exit requirements and ensure a smooth journey. This update aims to help UK travellers avoid unexpected costs and comply with Egyptian entry regulations, ensuring a hassle-free holiday experience.
