Yeovil Confirmed as Global Helicopter Production Hub Through Major Defence Deal

The Government has announced a landmark £1 billion contract with Leonardo, solidifying Yeovil's position as the proud home of global military helicopter production for the foreseeable future. This strategic agreement ensures the long-term viability of the Italian company's plant in Somerset, which had been awaiting this crucial decision.

Securing Jobs and Advancing Technology

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the deal will safeguard approximately 3,300 British jobs, with a significant portion located in the Yeovil area. As part of the contract, Leonardo will supply 23 new medium-lift helicopters to the UK's armed forces, enhancing military capabilities.

Furthermore, the agreement includes increased investment in Proteus, the United Kingdom's first autonomous uncrewed air system. Developed by Leonardo, this innovative platform recently completed its maiden flight in Cornwall, marking a significant milestone in autonomous aviation technology.

Government Leaders Hail Historic Partnership

Defence Secretary John Healey described the contract as a major vote of confidence in British industry, workers, and innovation. He emphasized that this investment strengthens the armed forces while creating substantial export opportunities.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves echoed these sentiments, calling it a historic partnership that supports British jobs and security today while positioning the UK at the forefront of next-generation defence and autonomous systems.

Economic Impact and Future Prospects

The Ministry of Defence projects that international orders for military helicopters from the Yeovil facility could generate over £15 billion in exports during the next decade. This contract aligns with the Government's broader strategy to increase defence spending to 2.6% of GDP starting in 2027.

Nigel Colman, managing director of helicopters UK at Leonardo, stated that the company remains committed to providing the UK armed forces with a world-class medium lift helicopter based on the advanced AW149 platform. He highlighted that this procurement will support more than 3,300 jobs in Yeovil, along with an additional 12,000 positions across the national supply chain.

This comprehensive agreement not only reinforces Yeovil's status as the home of British helicopter manufacturing but also establishes the UK as a global leader in defence innovation and autonomous systems development for years to come.
