Colleagues from Birmingham Airport and its partner organisations have sprinted into the festive spirit of giving, raising a significant sum for a vital local cause. A unique fun run held on the airport's operational runway has generated £18,680.91 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.
A Night of Nostalgia on the Tarmac
The event, named the Runway Fun Run, took place in the early hours of Saturday 22nd November. It was carefully scheduled during the airport's operational downtime to ensure no disruption to flights. Around 300 participants from various airport-based organisations came together to run, walk, and even dance along the iconic runway to boost funds.
For one night only, the tarmac was transformed into a vibrant celebration with a retro 1980s theme. Attendees enjoyed a themed event village and a high-energy Zumba warm-up before setting off under the night sky, creating a memorable disco-inspired experience far from the usual airport bustle.
Continuing a Strong Tradition of Support
This successful fun run is the latest in a series of impressive fundraising initiatives spearheaded by the Birmingham Airport community. It follows a major charity dinner held last month, which welcomed over 400 guests from 44 partner organisations at the Heart of England Conference Centre in Meriden. That inaugural dinner alone raised an incredible over £63,000 for the same hospital charity.
Further demonstrating their commitment, airport staff took part in a daring abseil from the organisation's head office building back in June, which secured an additional £32,668. Birmingham Children's Hospital, located in the city centre, is a leading UK specialist paediatric centre, providing expert care to more than 100,000 children and young people annually from across the country.
A Community Taking Flight for Charity
The collective effort highlights the powerful community spirit that exists within and around the regional transport hub. By leveraging their unique location and assets, such as the runway, the airport and its partners have created engaging and effective ways to support their nominated charity. The funds raised will directly contribute to the hospital's work, ensuring it can continue to offer world-class care to young patients and their families from across the region and beyond.
