Business Leader to Run London Marathon for Armed Forces Charity After Family Support

Chris Newenham, the managing director of Wilkin and Sons Ltd and Master of the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers, is set to run the 2026 London Marathon in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. This decision follows the exceptional care provided by SSAFA for his mother, Noelle, during her milestone 100th birthday, which included a thoughtful bouquet of flowers.

Deep-Rooted Military Family Ties

Chris's commitment to SSAFA is deeply personal, stemming from his family's proud military history across generations:

  • His grandfather, Captain Percy Worth Newenham, served in the Royal Munster Fusiliers during World War I, surviving wounds at Gallipoli.
  • His father, Edward (Ted) Newenham, enlisted in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers but was discharged due to health issues after contracting rheumatic fever in basic training; he later lived a healthy life until age 95.
  • His brother, Worth, joined the Royal Air Force as a pilot.

Chris explains, "My family's history is intertwined with the Armed Forces, and it has deeply shaped my appreciation for organisations like SSAFA."

Inspired by SSAFA's Support

The charity's unwavering assistance has left a lasting impression on Chris. He states, "SSAFA's unwavering support for my mother over the years has been exceptional. Their care goes above and beyond, and I am incredibly grateful." This gratitude fuels his determination to give back through fundraising efforts.

Ongoing Charity Involvement

Chris's dedication aligns with broader initiatives of the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers, where he serves as Master. In recent years, the company has focused much of its fundraising on SSAFA, including Chris's participation in the 13 Bridges Walk in 2025 to raise funds.

As he trains for the marathon, Chris reflects on the significance of his endeavour: "SSAFA is a remarkable organisation that continues to support service men and women and their families, often in ways that others might overlook. I'm proud to run in support of such a vital charity, knowing that every step I take will contribute to the wellbeing of the Armed Forces community."

SSAFA's Mission

SSAFA works to ensure that no one in the Armed Forces community—whether serving, veteran, or their families—ever has to battle alone. The charity provides essential support and resources to those connected to the military.
