A 102-year-old Second World War veteran from Bomber Command has experienced the thrill of silent flight, fulfilling a long-held ambition with a breathtaking glider journey over the Cambridgeshire countryside.
A Dream Takes Flight
Robbie Hall, aged 102, realised her dream on Saturday, December 13, thanks to the generosity of the Cambridge Gliding Centre. The opportunity arose after the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans first connected with the gliding club at North Weald Airfield on Remembrance Sunday. During that meeting, Robbie, who had enjoyed a Spitfire flight with the charity the previous year, expressed her desire to fly again – this time in a glider.
The club immediately offered to make her wish come true, providing a complimentary flight. On the day, perfect weather conditions allowed Robbie to soak in stunning aerial views during a peaceful voyage through the skies. Demonstrating her enduring spirit, she even took control of the glider for a period during the unforgettable experience.
Emotional Support and Gratitude
Robbie was accompanied and supported throughout the special day by Taxi Charity ambassador Kaye Gladden Thorpe and her husband, Al. Kaye described the event as profoundly moving, stating: "Seeing Robbie take to the skies at the age of 102 was incredibly emotional. She has such a love of life and adventure, and this experience meant the world to her."
David Guest from the Cambridge Gliding Centre said the club considered it a privilege to host Robbie. "Her story, her spirit and her service are truly inspiring, and we were honoured to play our part in creating such a memorable experience for her," he remarked.
Charity Reliant on Public Support
Colin Mills, chairman of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, extended heartfelt thanks to the gliding centre for their generosity and warmth. The charity, which facilitates such memorable experiences for veterans, is wholly reliant on donations, grants, and sponsorship to fund its vital work.
This remarkable flight marks another chapter in Robbie Hall's adventurous life, proving that the spirit of exploration knows no age limit. It stands as a powerful tribute to her service and an inspiring example of community support for veterans.
