West Midlands Police have revealed the exact number of e-bikes and e-scooters seized last year, with a significant increase in enforcement actions against illegally modified vehicles.

Sharp rise in seizures

In 2025, officers removed 114 e-bikes and 68 e-scooters, bringing the total to 182 vehicles seized. This marks a sharp increase from 102 in 2024 and 108 in 2023. The force has been cracking down on illegally modified bikes, with speeds recorded up to 48.6mph in recent months.

City centre operation

In April, more than a dozen illegal e-bikes and scooters were seized in Birmingham city centre. Officers intercepted riders and tested their bikes for illegal modifications before removing the upgraded machines. Sergeant Matthew King of Birmingham city centre said: “We’re making real progress in tackling this issue – which we know has caused significant concerns for residents, visitors, and businesses. These illegally modified vehicles can’t be ridden anywhere in public and will now be crushed. Our message remains clear: We will take action against those who put people at risk in the city centre, which we are turning into a no-go zone for illegal e-bikes.”

Public safety concerns

A force spokesman stated: “E-bikes themselves aren’t illegal, but many have been dangerously modified to go far faster than they should. They are often ridden on pavements or dumped in public spaces, creating a hazard for pedestrians. Our work is supported by the Sight Loss Councils, who tell us that blind and partially sighted people now feel more comfortable coming into the city centre.”
