West Midlands Police have confirmed that a fire which destroyed Ajwa Exotics, a convenience store on Gooch Street in Highgate, Birmingham, was started deliberately. The blaze broke out shortly before 2.30am on September 22 and ripped through the building, destroying everything inside.
The shop, which sold Caribbean, Asian, African and Arabic food, was left devastated. No one was injured in the incident. The owner, Irfan Ali, described feeling "stressed" when contacted by BirminghamLive. When asked if he knew of any reason why someone would target his business, he replied: "I have no idea."
Police launch arson investigation
West Midlands Police confirmed to BirminghamLive that the fire is now being investigated as arson. A spokesperson for the force said: "We can confirm the fire was started deliberately. We are now investigating it as arson. We're following up a number of lines of enquiry, and would continue to appeal for anyone with information to get in touch."
The fire also affected Big John's restaurant, which is located next door to Ajwa Exotics. A spokesman for Big John's franchise department said: "Big John's suffered smoke and water damage to its location which will be fully evaluated once it is safe to do so."
Resident anger at devastation
A nearby resident, who chose not to be named, expressed anger at the damage caused to the shop. He said: "This is my street. This is my area. These are my people. I hate seeing things like this."
A section of Gooch Street was cordoned off yesterday following the incident while emergency services dealt with the aftermath.
