Teenager Arrested Following Grandfather's Tragic Death

A 15-year-old schoolboy from Tamworth has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of 73-year-old Dennis Whiston, a much-loved grandfather.

Staffordshire Police were called to Hayle in Belgrave, Tamworth, just after 7pm on Friday, October 31, following reports of an assault.

Mr Whiston sustained a serious head injury during the incident and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Tragically, his condition did not improve, and he passed away four days later on Tuesday, November 4.

Police Investigation and Family Tribute

The teenage suspect was initially arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding on Sunday, November 2.

Following Mr Whiston's death, the boy was further arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday, November 12.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police stated: "He will be questioned by detectives in custody as part of our ongoing investigation and officers would like to reassure the community that we are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident."

In a moving tribute, Dennis Whiston's grieving family said: "Words cannot express how much Dennis was loved and respected as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather."

They also expressed gratitude for the public's support while requesting privacy to mourn their loss without speculation on social media.

Appeal for Information

Police are continuing their investigation and have issued an appeal for information.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the assault or who may have relevant footage.

This includes CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell video from the Hayle, Belgrave area around 7.10pm on October 31.
