Darlaston Residents Demand Action Over Rampant Antisocial Behaviour on King Street
Residents and business owners in Darlaston are urgently calling for measures to tackle the rampant antisocial behaviour that is plaguing King Street and the surrounding areas. The community has reported daily incidents of street drinking, fighting, and disruptive electric motorbike activity, which are severely impacting local safety and commerce.
Daily Chaos Described by Local Business Owner
Adrian Walker, co-owner of the Scabby Oss Cafe, has detailed the persistent issues affecting the area. He explained that drinkers are present "all day, every day and all night, every night," with groups of up to twenty individuals gathering throughout the day. Incidents include fist fights over cans of beer, occurring as early as 3:30 PM when families should feel secure.
After school hours, the situation escalates as youths on electric motorbikes "cause havoc up and down the high street smashing cars," further endangering pedestrians and property. This ongoing disruption is deterring shoppers and harming local businesses that are already struggling to survive on the high street.
Councillors Push for Public Space Protection Order
Councillor Lucie Nahal has called on Walsall Council to implement a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for the area. This order would make activities such as street drinking, aggressive begging, and drug use punishable by fines of up to £1,000, aiming to restore order and safety.
Councillor Matt Ward supported this call, noting that residents have been demanding action "for a long time." He emphasised that "Darlaston has been abandoned for years by the council," and stressed the need for people to feel confident enough to go out, which they currently do not.
Council Response and Ongoing Efforts
Walsall Council has confirmed that it is gathering evidence to support the implementation of a PSPO and has staff patrolling the area to monitor the situation. The council stated that it "fully intends to implement a PSPO should the correct legal tests be met," indicating a commitment to addressing the issue within legal frameworks.
The antisocial behaviour continues to have a detrimental effect on the community, with locals expressing frustration over the lack of effective intervention. The push for a PSPO highlights the growing demand for concrete actions to reclaim public spaces and ensure the well-being of Darlaston residents.
