Ex-Priest Alexander Bede Walsh Guilty of 1980s Church Sex Assault
Former Priest Convicted of Historic Child Sex Assault

A former Catholic priest, already serving a lengthy prison sentence for a series of sex offences, has been convicted of a further historic indecent assault against a child.

New Conviction for Serial Offender

Alexander Bede Walsh, aged 72, was found guilty on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, following a trial at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. The court heard how Walsh preyed on his victim, a boy, at a church in the Cheadle area of Stoke-on-Trent during the 1980s.

This latest conviction adds to a long list of crimes for which Walsh is already imprisoned. In 2012, he was convicted of two sexual offences and 19 counts of indecent assault. For those crimes, he is currently serving a 22-year sentence at HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire.

Police Work and Support for Survivors

Detective Constable Joseph Allen, who worked on the case, commended the effort to secure justice. "Officers have worked hard to support those affected by Bede Walsh’s crimes and to build evidence against him to secure today’s conviction," he stated.

DC Allen also issued a direct message to other potential survivors, emphasising the ongoing support available. "If you’re a survivor and feel ready to tell us what has happened to you, please know that you will be listened to and supported every step of the way as we seek to deliver justice."

A Pattern of Abuse

The latest trial focused on a non-recent sexual offence that occurred decades ago, highlighting the persistent efforts of law enforcement to investigate historic abuse cases fully. Staffordshire Police confirmed that Bede Walsh indecently assaulted the victim at the church in the 1980s.

This case underscores the importance of survivors coming forward, regardless of the time that has passed, as authorities continue to pursue perpetrators of such crimes.
