Birmingham Hit-and-Run Suspect Remains at Large After 2.5-Year Manhunt
Detectives in Birmingham have expressed frustration as their extensive efforts to locate a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run case have yet to yield results after two and a half years. The investigation centers on Francesko Gajta, who is wanted for questioning regarding the death of a 54-year-old man on Newton Road in Great Barr.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The victim was discovered unresponsive on Newton Road at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene. A BMW 520D, believed to have been involved in the collision, was found abandoned nearby, but the driver had already fled.
West Midlands Police launched a manhunt for Gajta, but his whereabouts remain unknown despite multiple public appeals. His mugshot has been viewed over 30,000 times on the force's most wanted list, highlighting the ongoing search.
Police Appeals and Family's Anguish
Sergeant Julie Lyman, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, has made direct appeals to Gajta and the public. "Following extensive enquiries and developments in the investigation, I am now in a position to name Francesko as a person of interest that we wish to speak to," she stated. "I would appeal directly to Francesko to do the right thing and get in touch with us."
The family of the victim continues to endure significant distress, lacking closure and justice as the suspect remains at large. Detectives speculate that Gajta may have fled to another region or even abroad to evade capture.
How to Assist the Investigation
Authorities urge anyone with information on Gajta's location to come forward. Key contact methods include:
- Using the Live Chat feature on the West Midlands Police website, quoting log 5121 of September 8.
- Emailing the investigation unit directly at SCIU@westmidlands.police.uk.
This case underscores the challenges in solving hit-and-run incidents and the prolonged impact on affected families. The community's cooperation is crucial in bringing this investigation to a resolution.
