Leicestershire Police have launched a significant investigation following what authorities are describing as a very serious incident near the De Montfort University campus in Leicester. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, prompting immediate police response and the establishment of multiple cordoned-off scenes around the university grounds.

Extensive Road Closures and Traffic Disruption

Police have implemented substantial road closures affecting both vehicles and pedestrians in the area surrounding the university campus, which is located to the southwest of Leicester city centre. The closures are expected to remain in place for several hours, causing significant disruption during the morning rush hour period.

In an official statement posted on social media, Leicestershire Police advised: "Motorists travelling into the city are advised to avoid the area if possible. If you are travelling into the city, please allow extra time."

The following roads are currently closed to all traffic:

  • Infirmary Road at the junction with Aylestone Road
  • Infirmary Road, Infirmary Square and Oxford Street to the junction of Newarke Street
  • No access to Infirmary Road by turning right from Welford Road
  • Carlton Street, York Road and Lower Brown Street
  • The Gateway and Gosling Street

Police have confirmed that NHS staff will be granted access to hospital car parks but must present identification to officers at the scene.

Emergency Services Response and Medical Attention

East Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they received an emergency call at 5:03pm on Tuesday reporting a medical emergency at an address in Leicester. The service deployed substantial resources to the scene, including:

  1. A paramedic in an ambulance car
  2. Three crewed ambulances
  3. An air ambulance responder

Emergency services transported one patient to Leicester Royal Infirmary for medical treatment following the incident.

University Response and Support Services

De Montfort University has issued a statement acknowledging the serious incident around their campus and confirming their cooperation with police investigations. A university spokesman stated: "We are aware of a very serious incident around our campus. We are working with Leicestershire Police as they launch an immediate investigation."

The university has confirmed that both staff and students witnessed the incident and are now receiving direct support from university welfare services. The spokesman added: "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what has happened. We are offering direct support to students and staff who witnessed the incident."

Police continue to preserve multiple scenes around Oxford Street and the university campus as their investigation progresses.
