Predator Jailed After Driving 100 Miles to Groom Midlands Schoolgirl
A man has been sentenced to prison after travelling approximately 100 miles to meet a 15-year-old girl he had groomed on social media platforms Snapchat and Instagram.
Awais Sheikh, aged 28 and originally from Rotherham in Yorkshire, first made contact with the victim in October 2024. Despite being informed of her age, he continued communication, complimenting her appearance and maintaining contact over several weeks.
The Predatory Journey and Meeting
Sheikh drove from his home in Yorkshire to Telford in the West Midlands, where he picked up the schoolgirl near her educational institution. He then took her to a McDonald's restaurant before proceeding to a secluded location near the Wrekin, a well-known landmark in Shropshire.
Concerned family members reported the girl missing, prompting a police search. Officers located her in Sheikh's vehicle at the Wrekin, where they discovered cannabis and condoms in the glove compartment.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
At Shrewsbury Crown Court, Sheikh pleaded guilty to meeting a child following sexual grooming. On Monday, April 13, he received a 22-month prison sentence. Additionally, he was given a further two months to run consecutively for activating an existing suspended sentence from a previous offence.
The presiding judge also ordered that Sheikh be placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years, ensuring continued monitoring upon his release.
Police Response and Victim Support
Detective Constable Jack Underwood of West Mercia Police described Sheikh's actions as "predatory, deliberate and deeply concerning." He emphasized that Sheikh "travelled across the country with the clear intention of exploiting a child" and stated there is "absolutely no excuse for what he did."
DC Underwood praised the victim's courage throughout the investigation and court proceedings, noting that "coming forward and reliving such a frightening experience takes immense strength." He affirmed the police force's commitment to protecting children from harm and ensuring offenders face appropriate consequences.
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police provided further details, explaining that the victim had initially ignored Sheikh's friend request but eventually accepted it while immediately disclosing her age. Despite this clear boundary, Sheikh persisted in contacting her.
The police spokesperson reiterated that this case demonstrates their willingness to "act swiftly and robustly whenever a child is put in danger," highlighting the importance of vigilance and reporting in preventing similar incidents.
