Thames Valley Police Introduces New RPU Tasking Team to Combat Dangerous Driving

Drivers across the Thames Valley region are facing a significant new enforcement initiative as police launch an intensified crackdown on dangerous and irresponsible motoring behaviors. Thames Valley Police has officially introduced the new Roads Policing Unit (RPU) Tasking Team, which commenced operations on February 16, 2026.

Proactive Approach to Road Safety

The dedicated RPU Tasking Team has been specifically created to strengthen the police force's approach to tackling harm on roads throughout the Thames Valley area. According to official statements, the team aims to support the delivery of safer roads for all residents and visitors across the region.

Operating across all three Thames Valley counties – Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire – the specialized unit will employ an evidence-based methodology to identify and address areas of greatest risk. Each month, the team will respond to emerging threats on roads causing the most harm within the region, following comprehensive reviews of current trends, collision data, intelligence reports, and emerging threats.

Intelligence-Led Enforcement Strategy

Inspector Simon Hills of the Roads Policing Unit emphasized the team's proactive focus this week, stating: “The team’s primary focus will be proactive roads policing and enforcement, and the public should expect to see increased action against those who break the law.”

The team will deploy proactively to identified high-risk locations to directly address the behaviors and offenses driving those risks. Inspector Hills further explained: “The team will be using all available enforcement options at their disposal in order to effectively target those road users who choose to put themselves and others at risk through dangerous, impaired or irresponsible driving.”

Data-Driven Deployment Process

Taskings for the RPU Tasking Team will be established through internal police processes, ensuring that deployments are consistently rooted in intelligence, robust data analysis, and a clear understanding of where intervention is needed most. This systematic approach aims to maximize the effectiveness of police resources in preventing accidents and saving lives.

In addition to their proactive enforcement work, the team will support local policing operations wherever possible and will specifically target individuals known to police through intelligence, including those involved in drink or drug driving offenses. Inspector Hills concluded: “We will be better equipped than ever to prevent danger and save lives.”

The launch of this specialized task force represents a significant escalation in Thames Valley Police's efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities throughout the region.
