Surrey Police Issue Major Update on Epsom Church Rape Allegation
Surrey Police have released a significant update regarding their investigation into an alleged rape reported outside a church in Epsom, stating they have found no evidence that the offence took place. This announcement comes as protests continue to unfold in the town, with demonstrators demanding more details about the suspects.
Details of the Alleged Incident and Police Response
According to initial reports, a woman in her 20s was allegedly followed after leaving Labyrinth Epsom nightclub and attacked outside Epsom Methodist Church in the early hours of Saturday, April 11. The incident sparked widespread concern and led to protests on Wednesday evening, where crowds gathered on Epsom High Street, blocking roads and causing disruptions. Police deployed dozens of officers to manage the situation, with reports indicating objects were hurled at them.
In an update issued this afternoon, detectives revealed that after reviewing extensive CCTV footage, interviewing potential witnesses, conducting forensic investigations, and carrying out house-to-house enquiries, they have "not found any evidence of the offence as reported". Assistant Chief Constable for Local Policing Sarah Grahame emphasized that the information about the alleged attack and potential suspects is "so limited", which has hindered the release of suspect descriptions, including ethnicity.
Addressing Speculation and Community Concerns
Grahame acknowledged the "strength of feeling" and frustration within the community due to limited public comments from police. She specifically addressed speculation linking the incident to asylum seekers or immigrants, stating, "There is no evidence that asylum seekers or immigrants were involved." The police have warned that they "will not tolerate disorder" and have confirmed additional officers will be deployed across Epsom throughout the weekend to maintain peace.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal
Despite the lack of evidence found so far, Surrey Police have stressed that the investigation remains ongoing. They are urging anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam, or helmet camera footage to come forward by contacting them online or calling 101, quoting reference PR/45260041426. The force continues to work diligently to clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported incident and ensure public safety.
