Paedophile Caught Watching Child Abuse on Train Told Police 'I Need to Delete Stuff'

David Johnson, a 35-year-old man from Wandsworth in London, was caught by a fellow passenger watching child sex abuse videos on a train from Stafford to London. The incident occurred around noon on Tuesday, September 12 last year, leading to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment.

Passenger's Quick Thinking Leads to Arrest

A vigilant passenger sitting behind Johnson noticed his mobile phone screen displaying explicit material. The witness observed Johnson exchanging messages before he opened a video showing a young child being abused. Johnson then switched to another chat where he was asked what kinds of videos he liked, to which he replied, 'just kids videos'.

The alarmed passenger messaged his partner about the disturbing content. When he looked back, Johnson was watching another video featuring an even younger child. The witness immediately moved to another part of the carriage and reported Johnson using British Transport Police's 61016 text service.

Police Response and Evidence Discovery

British Transport Police officers rushed to meet the train at London Euston, where Johnson was arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children. During the search, officers seized his mobile phone, which had an indecent image of a child as its wallpaper. In custody, Johnson asked officers if he could have his property back, stating he 'needed to delete some stuff'.

Further investigations revealed Johnson's phone contained nearly 200 indecent images of children, including 105 in category A, the most severe classification. Detectives also recovered chat transcripts showing Johnson had been messaging someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl, arranging to meet her for sex. However, officers later established the girl did not exist.

Court Sentencing and Consequences

Johnson pleaded guilty to six counts of making indecent images of children, two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, and arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence. At Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, April 1, he was sentenced to two years and three months in prison.

In addition to his jail term, Johnson was handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years and must sign the sex offender register for the same duration. Detective Constable Victoria Lowth praised the witness, saying, 'The quick thinking and courage of the man who saw Johnson's phone meant that we were able to quickly arrest him and uncover the scale of his offending.'

Railway Safety and Reporting Crimes

British Transport Police emphasized their commitment to making the railway a hostile environment for criminals, particularly those targeting children. They urged anyone who witnesses or is a victim of an offence on the railway to report it by texting 61016. This case highlights the importance of public vigilance in combating such crimes and protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.
