Travellers occupying a field next to an Asda superstore in Birmingham have been served eviction notices and must leave the site by Sunday or face enforcement action.
Encampment details and location
A large number of caravans, vehicles, and horses are currently parked on public land at the junction of Barnes Hill and Stonebrook Way in Weoley Castle. The open space, which serves as a vital shortcut for locals accessing bus stops and the Asda store, as well as a place for exercise, has been taken over by the encampment.
Councillor for Weoley and Selly Oak, Cherie Waddingham, confirmed that the group had been handed eviction papers and must vacate by Sunday or face enforcement. A clean-up operation is expected to take place after their departure.
Official statement and next steps
Waddingham said: "I can confirm the travellers currently located at Barnes Hill / Stonebrook Way were served notice today and have been instructed to leave the site by Sunday. If the site has not been vacated by then, bailiffs are scheduled to attend on Monday to enforce the notice. Once the site has been cleared, a clean-up team will be arranged if required to remove any waste and help restore the area."
She added: "Thank you to residents for your patience and for continuing to report any concerns. The appropriate processes are being followed, and I will continue to keep the community updated as the situation progresses."
Community impact and response
The encampment has disrupted local access to the Asda store and bus stops, with residents expressing concern over the use of the public space. The council has assured that the situation is being handled through proper legal channels, with bailiffs scheduled to attend on Monday if the site is not vacated by the Sunday deadline.
Residents are encouraged to report any further concerns as the council monitors the situation and prepares for potential cleanup operations following the travellers' departure.
