Rossendale Rotary's Round the Hills walk series continues to showcase local landmarks, with the latest highlight being Clowbridge Reservoir. This scenic spot, built in 1866, is a popular destination for walkers and water sports enthusiasts alike, and serves as the home of Rossendale Valley Sailing Club.
A historic reservoir with village roots
The reservoir was constructed in 1866, a project that involved the immersion of some roads out of the village of Gambleside. This historic village, now largely submerged, has left behind a legacy that walkers can still glimpse today.
Coal mining at Gambleside continued until 1936, when Sunnyside Printworks, its main customer, closed down. Since then, the village has faded, but a few remains can still be seen, offering a tangible link to the area's industrial past.
A scenic descent and popular activities
As walkers descend from Hameldon Hill, they are greeted by the lovely sight of Clowbridge Reservoir. The reservoir is not only a visual treat but also a hub for aquatic activities, with the Rossendale Valley Sailing Club calling it home.
The Round the Hills walk is part of Rossendale Rotary's efforts to promote local heritage and outdoor activity. The club has been highlighting different points of interest along the route, including the iconic Hameldon 'Golf Ball' and the stunning views from Cribden Hill.
