Residents have expressed they are 'living in fear' following the establishment of what is believed to be Birmingham's largest ever illegal traveller encampment. An aerial photograph has captured approximately 70 caravans, motorhomes, and vehicles occupying parkland near Barnes Hill in Bartley Green.
Arrival of the Travellers
Witnesses reported that the first arrivals began moving onto the site, which is situated just yards from an Asda superstore, on Sunday, June 7. The majority of the group arrived after dark on Tuesday, June 9, according to local accounts. The scale of the encampment is evident from above, with caravans spread across the playing field. Several vehicles displayed Irish registration plates.
Residents' Concerns
Local residents have voiced significant anxiety about the situation. One resident commented: 'They came once it got dark on Tuesday. We know there have been travellers pitching up around the city and they have had issues with horrendous mess and thefts so we are a bit on edge. They need somewhere to go, we appreciate that, but that place should not be here. There's lots of families around here who are now living in fear and dare not go over there.'
Council Response
Birmingham City Council has issued a statement addressing the unauthorised encampment. The council affirmed its commitment to protecting its land and stated it will take steps to recover the site. The statement noted: 'Birmingham City Council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it. The council has useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community – which is in line with Government policy.' Further details are available on the council's website regarding the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment carried out and updated in 2019.
