Porthmadog Museum Revamps Displays for New Season

The winter months proved to be a busy period for the dedicated volunteers at Porthmadog Museum, as they undertook a comprehensive overhaul of the wall displays. Many exhibits were revamped, repainted, and generally tidied up, while the artefacts themselves were thoroughly cleaned. The museum's layout was also rearranged to provide visitors with a clearer and more engaging insight into life in Porthmadog two centuries ago.

New Season Opening

This year, the museum opened its doors to the public at the beginning of April, and the volunteers have committed to keeping it open every day of the week from 12pm until 4pm. The team extends a warm welcome to local residents, especially those who visited some years ago, inviting them to come and see the significant changes that have been made.

New Acquisitions and Displays

The museum regularly accepts items of local nautical and mining interest and strives to incorporate them into the existing displays. A dedicated team of volunteers is on hand to open the museum, collect the admission fee of £2 per person, and answer any questions visitors may have. Without these fine individuals, the museum would be forced to close its doors tomorrow.

Volunteer Opportunities

At times, when volunteers are on holiday or attending hospital appointments, the team struggles to find cover. If you have an interest in local history, particularly concerning the slate trade from Porthmadog Harbour, your help would be a massive asset. Volunteering also offers personal benefits. For further details, call in any day from 12pm to 4pm or email llwynderw@yahoo.co.uk.

Heritage Walks Launched

This year, the team has also launched six self-guided Heritage Walks starting from the museum: Town of Porthmadog, Borth y Gest, Tremadog, Ynys Tywyn, Cob Crwn, and Boston Lodge. The museum will provide visitors with a waterproof A4 sheet of walking directions with a relevant map on the reverse. A small deposit is requested for these sheets in the hope that they will be returned; alternatively, visitors can use their mobile phones to take a photo of both sides. The walks are available in both English and Welsh.
