The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is set to conduct a series of flypasts over the West Midlands today, offering residents a rare chance to see iconic World War II aircraft in the sky. The flight, which typically includes a Spitfire, a Hurricane, and a Lancaster bomber, will follow a precise schedule across multiple locations.
Exact Times and Locations for the Flypasts
According to the BBMF's official schedule, the aircraft will begin their route over the West Midlands in the late morning. The first flypast is expected at 11:45 AM over the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. From there, the formation will head south, passing over the city of Birmingham at approximately 12:10 PM. Residents in areas such as Sutton Coldfield, Erdington, and the city centre are advised to look up at around that time.
The flight will then continue to Coventry, with a flyover at 12:25 PM, followed by a pass over Warwick at 12:40 PM. The final West Midlands appearance will be over Shropshire at 1:00 PM, before the aircraft return to their base at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.
Historic Aircraft in the Formation
The BBMF operates a fleet of six Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a Dakota, and two Chipmunks. Today's formation is expected to include a Spitfire Mk XVI, a Hurricane Mk IIc, and the Avro Lancaster PA474. These aircraft are maintained by the Royal Air Force and serve as a living tribute to the airmen who fought in the Battle of Britain.
According to a BBMF spokesperson, “The flypasts are a way to honour the bravery of those who served and to inspire future generations. We encourage the public to watch safely from the ground and respect any temporary restrictions in place.”

Spectators are reminded to maintain social distancing and follow any local COVID-19 guidelines. The BBMF advises that the best views will be from open spaces such as parks, but warns against gathering in large crowds. The aircraft will fly at altitudes of around 1,000 feet, so they should be clearly visible in clear weather conditions.
Weather forecasts for today indicate partly cloudy skies with good visibility, which should provide excellent viewing conditions. However, the BBMF notes that the schedule is subject to change due to weather or operational requirements.
