Northumberlandia, the popular nature reserve in Northumberland, is transforming into an open-air library this summer with the launch of Tails from the Trail. Starting Saturday, July 4, and running until Tuesday, September 1, this brand-new, completely free, family-friendly experience is designed especially for primary school-aged children to celebrate the National Year of Reading 2026.
A Unique Partnership Brings Literature to Life
Created in a special partnership with students and staff from Cramlington Learning Village, the self-led woodland adventure winds along the paths around the iconic landform sculpture, the Lady of the North. The trail seamlessly blends literature with the great outdoors, allowing visitors to discover the students' own creative writing pieces alongside reading recommendations tailored for secondary school young people and adults.
Book Borrow-and-Swap Cabinet
To keep the literary magic alive throughout the school holidays, a dedicated book borrow-and-swap cabinet has been installed near the café. This cabinet welcomes visitors of all ages to pick up a new story or share a favourite, encouraging a community of reading and sharing.
Inspiring a Love for Nature and Stories
Alex Reynolds, Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s education officer, said: “Tails from the Trail is a wonderful example of how nature and creativity can inspire each other. We’re thrilled to showcase the imagination of local students while giving families a fun, free way to explore Northumberlandia this summer. By bringing reading, writing, and wildlife together, we hope to spark a lifelong love of both stories and the natural world.”
Part of the Championing Nature Project
Tails from the Trail forms part of the wildlife charity’s wider Championing Nature Project, made possible thanks to support from The Championships, Wimbledon and Emirates.
