A colourful new mural has transformed the well-used railway steps connecting Quarry Street and Knowsley Crescent in Whitworth. The artwork is part of a community-driven improvement programme led by Rossendale Borough Council.
Flagship Project in £25,000 Enhancement Package
The mural is the flagship project within a £25,000 package of enhancements funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Earlier this year, the council's Economic Development team engaged with pupils from Whitworth High School, Whitworth Town Councillors, and local residents to identify priority areas for investment. The railway steps were consistently highlighted as a space in need of attention.
Collaborative Creation with Local History Focus
The mural was created collaboratively with Whitworth Museum and students from Whitworth Community High School, who researched the area's history. The completed artwork now provides a brighter, more welcoming route for residents, school pupils, and visitors. A new litter bin is also being installed to support a cleaner environment.
Artist's Perspective
Artist Amy Callaghan said: "Personally as an artist, I wanted young people to understand that heritage can be vibrant, it can build intrigue and it's something for them to enjoy. Bringing a small idea into a giant space, creating a more welcoming environment for younger people while celebrating the past."
Council's Response
Councillor Alan Neal added: "Rossendale Borough Council is proud to have delivered these improvements for Whitworth, and the new mural is a brilliant example of what happens when we listen to local people. Residents and young people told us this route needed attention, and the finished artwork brings colour, identity, and real pride to the town. A huge well done to all involved, especially the students at Whitworth High School who have been involved in the process throughout."
The Council will continue working with Whitworth Town Council and local partners on future opportunities to enhance the area.
