Birmingham City Council has temporarily suspended parking across several bays at St Pauls Square in the Jewellery Quarter to accommodate a mystery filming project. The suspension affects six bays near the corner of Mary Ann Street for two days: Monday, June 2, and Tuesday, June 3.
Historic Picnic Spot
St Pauls Square is the last remaining Georgian square in Birmingham, featuring a leafy churchyard that is considered one of the finest urban spaces in the city for relaxation. The square has been a popular location for film crews, hosting productions such as DI Ray and Silent Witness in recent months.
Film Hub
The Jewellery Quarter's historic streets have attracted numerous productions. Steven Spielberg filmed scenes for Ready Player One on Livery Street, transforming it into a race track and a barren US wasteland. The Peaky Blinders series also used the neighbourhood to capture old Birmingham scenes.
Protected Heritage
The Jewellery Quarter is a protected neighbourhood, with its old frontages and workshops largely untouched to preserve its heritage. A major celebration is planned for May 2027, marking 250 years of history with the first Birmingham Jewellery Biennial. Last year, the area was named a World Craft City by the UNESCO-affiliated World Crafts Council.
The biennial will be a month-long festival featuring workshops, exhibitions, activities, and jewellery making. The area is also known for its independent food and drink scene and museums, including the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, the Coffin Works, and the Pen Museum.
