Singer-songwriter Annie Alice made a return appearance on the Jo Bailey Drive show, following the release of several new songs. This week's episode featured stripped-down performances of "Empty Room," "Exempt Me," and even an as-yet-untitled track.
From Open Mics to Local Stardom
Born in Brentwood, Annie spent over two decades in Australia before returning to her home county. Since then, she has gained confidence as an artist on the local music scene. Starting with open mic nights, she has progressed to live shows across Essex. During last week's episode, Jo Bailey noted how frequently Annie is recognized by locals as a musician based on her gigs in the area—a fact that seems to surprise Annie herself.
Music as Emotional Expression
The conversation centered on music as an expressive tool, allowing Annie to channel emotions from difficult times. Many of her songs emerge from strong emotional experiences, leading to a creative process that transforms an initial idea into a fully produced work.
Working with Producer Mark Topham
Annie discussed collaborating with producer Mark Topham on her forthcoming four-track EP. The project began with basic acoustic demos but evolved into complex studio versions featuring strings, percussion, and brass arrangements. One track, "Exempt Me," comprises about 50 different parts during recording.
Forming a Live Band
In addition to launching her EP, Annie is assembling a full live band to support her performance at The Essex Arms on June 27. Although she notes that organizing a night out is often easier than forming a band, she was fortunate to find musicians with excellent compatibility who get along well. The project has also been a family affair: her son Arthur designed her logo, and daughter Clover created the album cover artwork.
