A baby red panda cub has been born at West Midlands Safari Park, bringing joy to conservation efforts for the endangered species, which has a wild population of less than 10,000 individuals.
Birth Details
The fluffy cub, whose sex is not yet known, was born on June 21 to mother Mei Lin, aged six, and father Sanka, aged eight. Keepers first noticed the arrival when they heard tiny squeaks from a nest box. A guest staying at the Red Panda Cottages was fortunate to catch the first glimpse as Mei Lin moved the cub between nest boxes.
Fourth Cub in Four Years
This is the fourth red panda cub born at the park in as many years. It comes just a month after the cub's older sisters, Nadiya and Nikisha, left in May to join other zoos as part of the endangered species breeding programme.
Keeper's Reaction
Vicky McFarlane, Head Keeper of the Discovery Trail, said: "Following last year’s red panda cubs, Nadiya and Nikisha, leaving for their new homes just a few short weeks ago, we are overjoyed to announce that Mei Lin has given birth to another beautiful red panda cub! Guests in the Red Panda Cottages were the first to get a sneak peek at the new arrival, as Mei-Lin moved the cub early in the morning of 21 June, following its birth a few days before. Mei Lin is an experienced mum, having had three cubs previously and she knows exactly what to do, so keepers leave her undisturbed to do what she does best."
Conservation Importance
With fewer than 10,000 red pandas left in the wild, every birth is vital. The species is listed as endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss, poaching, and the illegal wildlife trade. The park supports the Red Panda Network, sponsoring a forest guardian to protect wild red pandas and their habitat.
Future Plans
Keepers will monitor the cub from a distance for several weeks. A health check at three months will determine the sex and a name, which will start with the letter 'O' as per the park's 2026 naming scheme. The cub will stay in the nest box with its mother for the next few months, and guests are unlikely to see it regularly until it is about four months old. Visitors can see the father, Sanka, at the Red Panda Retreat in the Safari Walk area.
West Midlands Safari Park is open daily for summer, with advance booking available online.
