The BBC's acclaimed crime drama Strike, often compared to Slow Horses and The Capture, is set to return with a brand new series. The show, which first aired in 2017, has captivated millions of viewers and is based on the Cormoran Strike book series by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
Plot and Characters
The series follows war veteran Cormoran Strike (Tom Burke), who works as a private detective from a modest office on London's Denmark Street. He is joined by his assistant-turned-business-partner Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger). Together, they solve gruesome mysteries while dealing with their own personal struggles. Six series have aired so far, each adapting a specific novel.
The Upcoming Series: The Running Grave
The most recent series, The Ink Black Heart, averaged 7.1 million viewers, making it one of the BBC's most-watched dramas. The BBC has confirmed a new series titled The Running Grave, with Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger reprising their roles. The plot involves Strike and Robin being hired by Sir Colin and Sally Edensor to find their estranged son Will, who has been brainwashed by a religious cult called the Universal Humanitarian Church. Led by the charismatic Jonathan Wace, the church uses a charitable facade and aggressive lawyers to silence critics. Robin goes undercover at the cult's Norfolk headquarters, Chapman Farm, while Strike gathers information from former members. The mystery revolves around the death of the Drowned Prophet, Daiyu, leading the detectives into dangerous territory.
Critical Acclaim
The series has received widespread praise. One viewer commented: "Excellent cast, dynamic storyline, unique cinematography... It's intelligent and sophisticated." Another said: "Over too soon! Each series had a new mystery with twists and turns." A third added: "Brilliant. The acting was brilliant, and the storyline had you guessing from the start. 10 out of 10."
All series of Strike are available on BBC iPlayer.
